Tottenham's Missing Pieces: Why Spurs Need a Striker and Progressive Midfielder

Written By Josh Bark

Tottenham Hotspur find themselves at a crossroads. After an inconsistent campaign that exposed weaknesses across the squad, the upcoming transfer window may be the most important in recent years. While improvements can be made in several areas, two positions stand out above all others: striker and progressive midfielder. If Spurs are serious about returning to the Champions League and competing at the top end of the Premier League, these signings are not luxuries — they are necessities.

For all of Tottenham's attacking talent, there remains a glaring issue in the squad: a consistent source of goals through the middle. Too often, Spurs have relied on wide players and moments of individual brilliance to break down opponents. Against deep defensive blocks, the lack of a clinical striker capable of occupying centre-backs and converting chances has been evident.

A top-class striker would provide:

• Consistent goal output throughout the season

• Better hold-up play to bring attacking midfielders into the game

• A focal point in the penalty area

• Greater tactical flexibility for Roberto De Zerbi

The Premier League's elite teams all possess forwards capable of deciding matches on their own. If Tottenham want to close the gap, they must do the same.

Just as important is the need for a progressive midfielder. While Spurs have players capable of controlling possession, they often lack someone who can consistently receive under pressure, break opposition lines with passes and carry the ball through midfield. The best teams dominate games not only through possession, but through progression.

A progressive midfielder would provide:

• Improved ball progression from defence into attack

• More opportunities for Tottenham's forwards

• Greater control against high-pressing opponents

• Reduced creative burden on attacking players

Too many Tottenham attacks become predictable. A midfielder capable of turning defence into attack in one movement could transform the entire system.

De Zerbi's football is built on courage in possession, intelligent movement, positional rotations and attracting pressure before breaking through opposition lines. His system thrives when players are technically secure and capable of making decisive actions in advanced areas. For that vision to succeed consistently, Spurs need players who can elevate the quality of the squad in key moments.

A striker provides the finishing touch. A progressive midfielder provides the link. Together, they could become the foundation of Tottenham's next step forward.

This summer represents a huge opportunity. Tottenham already possess talented young players and a manager with a clear identity, but talent alone will not bridge the gap to England's elite. The club must be decisive.

A clinical striker and a progressive midfielder should be at the very top of the priority list. If Spurs get those two signings right, they will not only improve immediately, but take a major step towards returning to where the club belongs: competing for Champions League football and challenging at the highest level under Roberto De Zerbi.
